First Amendment

The First Amendment is one of the biggest things that foreigners look at and admire about the United States. The ability to speak out freely on the government is something that not many countries are able to say they have. I feel as if it is one of, if not, the most important amendment we follow. Freedom of Speech is much more complicated than being able to speak out on certain issues. We use this to be able to vote for our government representatives, take a stand and speak out against government decisions. and give people a chance to be themselves. Although there are many more ways we use the First Amendment, these are the most important speech theories to me.

One main use of the First Amendment is the use to vote our own government representatives. Although having multiple political parties has caused a serious divide in our country, for years it has proven to create a society where we accept who our president is. Many countries are forced into having the same ruler for decades, without change. These countries do not preach freedom of speech, and have lived under dictatorship rule, and the citizens of these countries are not allowed to say their disagreements with their government, but you can tell they are not thrilled. Even though having a big divide in the country isn’t great, we accept the fact that whoever is elected won their election due to a fair process. We make our decisions based off the two candidates, and hear what they have to say about how they feel they can change the country for the better. Without Free speech, we would not be able to elect who we think is most fit for the job of Commander and Chief, and other positions across our government.

Another aspect of the First Amendment is the ability to speak out against the government. It is expected that 330 million people are not going to agree on the decisions the government makes. Luckily for the citizens of the United States we are allowed to speak our minds, and disagree. With the increased use of social media, we can now use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to talk about social issues, and our problems with our elected officials. Twitter is used for expressing opinions. Some use it for sports, or entertainmen, but many use it to talk about politics. A day where I saw almost everyone I knew used social media, was on “Blackout Tuesday” back in June 2020. On this day many people post a black screen, with the hashtag “Blackout Tueday” This was done to increase awareness about the murders of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, and many other African Americans who have been murdered by police due to the color of their skin.

At the end of the day, I think this is by far the most important ammendemnt, and is what sets us apart from many other countries in the world. I am happy to know that I am allowed to speak my mind, and not have to worry about being arrested, or killed due to my beliefs about our elected officals.
